"Aged Grave Digger is Stricken with Apoplexy. Death of John Abel at Catholic Cemetery Yesterday. While engaged in filling the grave of the late Thomas Crystal yesterday morning, John Abel, for many years sexton of the Catholic cemetery, was stricken with apoplexy and died before medical aid could reach him. The body of Crystal had been lowered into the grave and the aged grave digger, assisted by Samuel Bennett, had fastened the lid on the rough box, when Abel and Bennett began shoveling dirt into the grave. Abel had worked but a few seconds when he dropped his shovel and walked to a nearby curbing where he sat down. Bennett asked Abel if he was ill, but received no reply, and ran to the old man's side. He had scarcely reached the aged grave digger's aid, when the latter fell forward, and would have struck the earth had he not been supported by Mr. Bennett. A number of the people who had attended the funeral of Crystal had not yet left the cemetery, and to them Mr. Bennett called for aid. P. J. Duffy drove rapidly to the Northern Pacific depot where he telephoned Dr. Ben C. Brooke. The man had been dead several minutes when the physician arrived. The body was removed to the Abel home, 1804 Butte avenue, where the deceased had lived with his two sons, Jacob and Joseph. Mr. Abel had four sons and three daughters. The funeral will be held to-morrow morning at eight o'clock from the Cathedral of the Sacred Hearts." Helena Independent, 4/24/1902, page 8.
