Mr. Howard Wyatt Avery, age 92, of Rome died Thursday night, Jan 29, 2004 at a local hospital.
Mr. Avery's family has lived in Floyd County since the mid -19th century, and he lived his entire life here. Mr. Avery was born Dec. 24, 1911, the son of the late William Henry Avery, Sr. and Allie Tomazine Walters Avery. He was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church, where his ancestors were charter members, and he had served as a deacon, chair of the board of deacons, and as adult men's Sunday school teacher. Mr. Avery also had served on the Floyd County Board of Education. He worked at Tubize, which later became Celanese, and the government as a farm inspector during the Great Depression. Most of his working life, he was self employed. For many years he owned and operated the H.W. Avery Cotton Gin and Saw Mill, later working with Horace Day Lumber as a timber broker. Mr. Avery was actively employed until age 75.
Mr. Avery was preceded in death by two daughters, Rebecca Ann Avery born in 1936 died in 1937; and Mrs. Doris Avery Billings in 2002; by a sister, Mrs Ruby Mae Chastain; and brothers, Dr. Julius Hillier Avery and James Russell O. Avery. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ava Lee Ayers Avery, daughters, Jane Avery Donahue and her husband John, of Macon, Sharon Lorraine Parker and Elna Ruth Payne, of Rome; sons, Wyatt Truettt Avery and wife Brenda, of Ft. White, Florida, William Henry Avery III "Bill" and wife Libby, of Orlando, Florada; son-in-law, Tom Billings Sr., of Rome; two brothers Robert S. Avery, of Moultrie, and William Henry Avery Jr., of Jonesboro; 12 grandchildren, Tom Billings Jr., Steve Billings, Butch Payne, Susan Raza, Mary Mathis, Georgia Heard, Brian Avery, Nicolle Avery, Holly Burton and Paige Rendon; 12 great grand children survive.
Funeral services were held Monday at Garden Lakes Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with Dr. Floyd Roebuck officiating. Internment was at Pisgah Baptist Cemetery. Mr. Avery lay in state from 1 p.m. until the funeral.
Pallbearers were grandchildren, Tom Billings Jr., Steve Billings, Butch Payne and Susan Raza.
The family received friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Oaknoll Chapen of Jennings Funeral Home.
The services for Mr. Howard Wyatt were under the directions of the Oaknoll of Jennings Funeral Home 2542 Shorter Ave.
