Fort Dodge Messenger, August 13, 1942-P. H. Bowen Dies In California; Ill Two Years-Heart Trouble Fatal to Former Well-Known Fort Dodge Resident

Philip Henry Bowen, well-known resident for many years, died Wednesday evening, August 12, 1942 at his home in Long Beach, California, after a two year illness with heart disease. Philip Bowen was born February 14, 1875 at Nashua, Iowa. He was 67 years, 5 months and 28 days of age. He had resided in Fort Dodge most of his life. He was an engineer with the Illinois Central railroad. When health failed two years ago, Philip, Mabel and their daughters moved to Long Beach to reside.

Philip Henry Bowen, age 27, son of Philip and Nora (O'Connell) Bowen married Mabel Smiley, age 18, daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth (Metcalf) Smiley at Sacred Heart Church on August 1, 1901. Pastor Edmund Heelan officiated.

The 1920 US census shows Patrick (44) and Mabel (36) with daughters Bonita (18), Helen (15), Margaret (14), Gail (11) and Betty Jean (one month) living in Fort Dodge.

His wife Mabel Bowen and five daughters survive. The daughters are Magdalena, Mrs. Chester Edwards of Dakota City, Margaret, Mrs. Edward Fisher of Philadelphia, Miss Helen Bowen, Gail, Mrs. Isaac Newton Page and Betty, Mrs. Otto F. Boll, all of Long Beach. Four sisters, Kate, Mrs. Edward Taylor, Martha, Mrs. James McIntyre and Miss Mary Bowen, all of this city, Margaret, Mrs. George Williams, of Chicago and two brothers, William Bowen of Cherokee and Daniel Bowen, living in California, also survive.
