James S. Baker was born in Arkville a village in Middletown, Ulster, New York. Ulster county was divided in 2 counties Ulster and Delaware in 1797. He lived in Ulster/Delaware County until about 1835. 1835 to 1850 in Yates County New York. He died between 1870 and 1880 in Jordan Township, Whiteside, Illinois. His daughter, Mary Baker Brown lived next to him in Jordan Township, Whiteside, Illinois. No death certificate has been found. It wasn't required until 1916.
