Death: Feb. 8, 1911

From "The Religious Herald", March 9, 1911:

"ELISHA BETTS

Died, after a brief illness, at his home, near Smith's Cross Roads, Va., Feb. 6th, 1911, Elisha Betts, in the sixty-ninth year of his age.

Brother Betts was a most exemplary Christian and his death comes as a sad loss to the church, and the community in which he lived. He was a constituent member of the Ephesus Baptist Church, and was seldom absent from its services. He loved especially the service of song, was ever ready in prayer and testimony, and for years was a teacher in the Sunday-school. A man of fine presence, of marked ability, and genial nature, he has left behind him a record that will be an inspiration and comfort to others.

Brother Betts served well his day and generation. He was a cadet at Lexington at the outbreak of the war, and saw service under his instructor, Stonewall Jackson, and later in the 3rd Va. Cavalry. He was at one time President of the Concord Association, and at the time of his demise was County Chairman of the Anti-Saloon League; member of the Electorial Board of the County, and also of the School Board of his district.

Brother Betts was a native of Halifax county, and after his marriage to Lucy Baskerville Watkins, came to his late home in Mecklenburg. He is survived by the widow and the following children: Mrs. T.A. Gayle, Union Level, Va.; R.W. Betts, Asheville, N.C.; W.S. Betts, Richmond, Va.; Mrs. D.L. Lewis of Society Hill, N.C.; and Geo. M. Betts and Miss Julia M., and Nannie C. Betts, of this place. A member of the widely known Betts family, of Halifax county, he is survived also by a number of brothers and sisters, among them being Rev. J.T. Betts, of Litchfield, Ky. Funeral services and interment at Ephesus, conducted by his pastor, J.W. Davies.

"Some day when fades the golden sun
Beneath the rosy-tinted west,
My blessed Lord shall say, 'Well done!'
And I shall enter into rest"

From Brother Betts' favorite hymn, 'Saved by Grace."

J.W.D.
