William M. Dufur was born about 1807 in New Hampshire. His parents are believed to be Calvin Dufur and Rhoda (maiden name unknown).

William M. and his wife Phebe were the parents of six known children: Rhoda A. Dufur, b. 1827, NY; James Hollister Dufur, b. 17 Apr 1833, NY; Emeline L. Dufur, b. 04 Feb 1834, NY; Mary T. or J. Dufur, b. about 1837, NY; William Riley Dufur, b. 08 Jun 1846, IL P. A. Dufur, b. about 1849, IL.

The last known record of William M. is the 1880 census, which shows William M. living in the household of daughter Emeline and her husband, Isaac Jackson in Williamson County, Texas. Oldest son James Hollister and his family are living two counties to the northwest, in San Saba County. Oldest daughter, Rhoda A., her husband John Stevens, and their children had lived for a time in Williamson County, near Emeline and Isaac, but had returned to Illinois. Younger son William Riley had remained in Arkansas when the extended family, or at least most of it, was living in Sebastian County there. Later, William Riley, his wife, and their son Riley Bobo, who began using the spelling Duffer, went to Oklahoma. Emeline and Isaac also later went to Oklahoma. Daughter Mary T. or J. was also last found in Sebastian County. No records have been found regarding youngest daughter P. A. (whose name is believed to be Phebe A.) or wife Phebe after 1850.

At this time, a death date or place for William M. has not been located. Some have stated that he died 20 Jun 1915 in Crawford County, Arkansas, but that is incorrect, as he would have been 108 years old. Not impossible, but if he had, there would be some evidence of that. Such an event would have been written up in the newspapers, and family would certainly have kept copies and would also have kept the story alive. It would also have meant that he died in the same place and on the same date as son James Hollister Dufur, for whom there is a record.

William was not one to stay in one place for too long. After 1880, he may have remained in Williamson County. He might have gone to San Saba County, where James Hollister lived at the time, or to Jack County when Emeline and Isaac went there, and even to Oklahoma with them, if he lived long enough. He might have returned to Arkansas, or even back to Illinois or New York or New Hampshire. But it is pretty safe to say that he did not live until 1915.

Please note that William H. Dufer/Dufur, who married Fanny Josephine Carpenter, is not a son of William M. Dufur. William H. and his family remained in Menard County, while William M. and most of his family, including William Riley, are later found in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Reliable evidence clearly shows that William Riley was the son of William M. Dufur. William H was simply not.
