Death: Aug. 26, 1864

California, USA

It was wedding bells for Samuel Handy and Jane Crow on March 25, 1822 in Clark County, Illinois! They probably married in Union Township or West Union Township, near their place of residence. Samuel was a plain, unpretentious farmer, an honest man, and an excellent family provider, having entered land and improved a farm as an early pioneer of York, Clark County, Illinois. Their family lived a simple, farming life as some of the earliest settlers of their time in York, Illinois with at least four daughters: Amanda, Nancy, Naomi, and Louisa.

Amanda Mary Dolson (maiden name Handy).
Amanda married David H. Dolson on March 26, 1848 in Clark County, Illinois. David was born on August 20, 1818 and he died on February 5, 1878, having served in Company K, 1st Regiment, Illinois Foot Soldiers Infantry, during the Mexican War beside his brother-in-law, Austin Handy.

Nancy (maiden name Handy) married Mr. Malone.

Naomi (maiden name Handy) married Mr. Brown, yet she is interred with the name of Naomi Handy in the row with her brother Albert Galiton/Gallatin Handy and other family members.

Louisa Handy: The possible marriage(s) of Louisa are being researched.

Samuel and Jane had at least two known sons:

Austin L. Handy has more information below.

Albert Galiton/Gallatin Handy married Mary and they are interred together in the same row with other family members at Greenwood Cemetery in Arcata, Humboldt County, California.

In 1855, Samuel and Jane sold their Illinois farm and they moved to Arcata, Humboldt County, California. They then spent their later years in Arcata. After losing his precious Jane, Samuel lived in the Arcata home of his son Albert Gallatin/Galiton Handy and his family, all of whom were farmers.

Union Township, Clark County, Illinois, 1820 Census

Reflected by the information below, Samuel Handy, Reuben Crow and Joshua Crow were the "Free white males" who were the heads of their households. It is believed that Reuben or Joshua could have been either a father or a brother to Jane Crow, and the geographical proximity of their households was the way Jane met Samuel. This census had columns for "Free colored" and "Slaves." The three households below did not have any numbers in these two columns, which columns and their information is offensive today; however, recording this type of information was routine in 1820. Women's names were not typically recorded and they were counted as "other whites."

Samuel Handy, head of household # 138
"1 Free white males 21 & up; 5 other whites"

Rheuben Crow, head of household # 127
"2 Free white males 21 & up; 5 other whites"

Joshua Crow, head of household # 129
"1 Free white males 21 & up; 2 other whites"

This is a great read! Mentioned at the link above is Thomas Handy (brother of Angeline Handy Pease), who served as Sheriff from 1850 until 1853. Also mentioned are Pvt. Austin Handy with Pvt. David Dolson (who married Amanda Handy), Company K, 1st Regiment Illinois Foot Soldiers Infantry. Austin and David (both of whom resided in Union Township, Clark County, Illinois), first enrolled together in the war with Mexico, but they were mustered out/discharged on June 27, 1840, because the quota of men for that war was already filled. Austin and David again enrolled together on June 18, 1846 at Alton, Illinois and were discharged on June 17, 1847 at Camargo, Mexico. This Austin Handy individual was most probably the son of Samuel and Jane Handy.

The below census shows Samuel Handy living in the household with his and Jane's son, Albert, after Jane died in 1864. Note that the value of Albert's real estate and his personal effects were very high values for the time period; he was a successful man. It could be that Albert was able to use family money from the sale of their farm in Illinois to purchase land in Humboldt County, California. Those items in brackets [ ] are transcriptions taken from the census image.
