Anthony Barney was born in MA in 1801, the 10th child of Jonathon Barney and his wife Elizabeth Mason. His father died when he was young and he had to work hard to attain his dream of becoming a medical doctor.
Dr. Anthony Barney received his medical degree from Willoughby College at Fairfield NY in 1825 thanks to the help and support of his elder brother Mason Barney.
Soon after his graduation he married Roxy Chapin and moved to Independence, NY where he practiced medicine for 53 years.
His wife Roxy died January 23 1838 leaving a family of four sons and three daughters. Dr. Barney remarried the same year in June to Henrietta Horton and had six more children.
His territory covered the area from Alfred to the PA line and from Scio to Jasper. Most calls were made on horseback.
Two of his sons and two of his grandsons also became physicians.
