John Abbott married Elizabeth Staley in October of 1856 in White County, Illinois. (marriage index) John & Elizabeth were together in Doniphan County, Kansas census reports in 1865, 1870, & 1875. Census reports list their children as Minerva Eveline, b. ca. 1858 in Illinois; Harriet Jane, b. ca. 1860 in Illinois; Laura E., b. ca. 1861 in Kansas; Edward, b. ca. 1867 in Kansas; & Katherine, b. ca. 1875 in Missouri.

This family was in Greenwood County, Kansas in 1880 and Los Angeles County, California in 1900. Census reports list John Abbott's birth in Ohio, with Elizabeth born in Illinois. She was recorded as the mother of 5 children in 1900, with 4 living.

John Abbott enlisted August 20, 1862 in Co. D, 13th Kansas Infantry. He mustered out in June of 1865. His Kansas enlistment record shows that he enlisted at Atchison, Kansas, listing his birthplace as Athens County, Ohio and his age as 32 years and 4 months. He was a farmer. John Abbott of Co. D, 13th Kansas Infantry, received a Civil War pension in 1890, filed from Colorado. His widow, Elizabeth, received a pension in 1904, filed from California.
