Mrs.J.W. Harper is Buried Wednesday
Pioneer Who Lived Here Forty-Five Years Taken By Death Sunday
Funeral services were held Wednesday for Mrs J.W. Harper 78, a pioneer resident of Sidney who passed away last Sunday morning. Rev C.C. Mills of the Methodist church was in charge. The crowded church paid last respects to this pioneer wife and mother who first came to this section of Nebraska exactly 45 years ago Wednesday. Homesteading with her husband she lived the hardy life of a frontiers woman for 13 years before moving to Sidney.
Nancy Jane Mauldin was born at Highland, Ms January 29, 1853 and departed life Sunday morning March 6, 1931 aged 78 years one month and ten days.
Though living in the South, her people were Union sympathizers. In retaliation therefore at the time of the battle of Wyuka (Iuka) and Corinth the rebels took the family's cattle and burned their home. The family escaped to the Union lines and finally reached Illinois, settling at Assumption.
The deceased was married to John W. Harper Dec 23, 1873 to this union were born five children a pair of twins having passed away in infancy. They moved to the West in their early married life.
Mrs. Harper early became a Christian and united with the Presbyterian church but on coming to the West she joined the Methodist church of which she was an honored member at the time of her death.
She is survived by her husband John W. Harper, one daughter Elizabeth May Burke of Denver, two sons William F. Harper and Charles E. Harper, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
