Jesse Morris Acuff

J.M. Acuff was born on a farm north of Glasco, Kansas, Sept. 23rd, 1878, and died in Letterman Hospital, San Francisco, July 5th, 1936, after a five months illness, due to lymphosarcoma and complications.

He was the fourth son of William W. and Sarah Bennett Acuff, who settled in the Glasco vicinity in 1873. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Rose Acuff, of 1957 B St., Hayward, California, and three brothers, Horace, of Conway, Kansas; Joseph of Loma Linda, California; and William D. of Exeter, California. Mrs. Mary Copeland, Mrs. Ella Whalen, Mrs. Mary Pratt, Mrs. Emma Dickerson of Glasco are cousins.

For thirty-two years he served in the U.S. Navy, retiring in July, 1932. During the World War he commanded a submarine chaser. Near the close of his service he was an instructor in military training at the University of California, at Berkeley. After his retirement he was national president of the Fleet Reserve Association and traveled over the U.S. in the interest of that order. In May, 1936, he was elected Junior Vice-commander, state department United States Spanish War Veterans.

His funeral was held on July 7th at Grant D. Milles Cathedral Chapel in Oakland with Masonic Services and Fleet Reserve services at night. On July 8th his body was interred with military services in the national cemetery, San Francisco.
