Walter Paul Burke, 91, of McDonald Street, West Nanticoke, died Tuesday at Guardian Elder Care, Sheatown section of Nanticoke.
Born May 28, 1912, in Plymouth Township, he was the son of the late John and Mary Jane Burke. He attended St. Vincent's Parochial School, Plymouth. He worked in the mining industry and at Retreat State Hospital. He was later self-employed in the ice and coal delivery business. He operated a fleet of school buses for the Nanticoke Area School District and later retired from the sanitation and hauling business. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church, Plymouth. He was elected and served as a Plymouth Township Supervisor. He was a veteran of World War II, serving under Gens. Clark and Patton in the Army Corps of Engineers in North Africa, Sicily and Northern Italy. He was a member of the Nanticoke American Legion Post 350 and the Nanticoke Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Edward, Thomas, William, Frank, Raymond and Joseph; sisters, Mary Williams and Nellie Faulkner.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, the former Theodosia Ann Kravitz; sons, Edward John, Macungie; Walter Paul, Gloucester, Va.; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent DePaul Church, Plymouth. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Larksville.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday.
