Perry Record, Perry, NY April 30, 1903: SUICIDE OF AGED MAN. EDWARD ALLEN weary of life drowned himself in a Watering Trough Last Saturday. No reason apparent for the shocking deed. Mr. Edward Allen, father of Mr. John Allen, committed suicide by drowning, last Saturday afternoon at the farm home of his son, near Burke Hill. His age was nearly 87 years, No reason can be found for the act, as Mr. Allen had been in good health for one of his advanced years and appeared to be In good spirits. He had made no complaint of his condition and showed no Indications of despondency. Mr. John Allen and his son went to work In a field, after dinner, and about 1:30 o'clock Mrs. Allen and daughter came to this village to do their trading. The old gentleman evidently left the house soon after their departure and went to the barnyard, where he was found about 5.30 o'clock, lying at full length, face downward, in the watering trough. Coroner Goodwin was quickly summoned and found that suicide had apparently been committed several hours earlier, shortly after the family had left the house. Mr. Allen was born in Ireland and had been a resident of this country tor 31 years. Be leaves four sons—John, with whom be resided; Joseph, of LaGrange; Robert, of York William, of Fort Collins, Colo.; also one daughter, Mrs. Daniel Loudin of York. Funeral services were held last Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Covington Presbyterian Church, Rev. A. H. Gillfillan of York officiating. Interment was in the Covington cemetery. Six grandsons of the deceased acted as bearers, vix: James and John Allen, Jr., of Perry Louis and Edward Allen of LaGrange; and the two Loudin brothers, of York.
