Organized at Camp Butler, Ill., and mustered in for 100 days May 31, 1864. Moved to Rock Island Barracks, Ill., June 3, and duty there guarding prisoners of war until September, 1864. Mustered out September 24, 1864. Regiment lost during service 16 by disease.
He is also listed in the 65th Illinois Infantry Consolidated.
At age 29, he married Mary (Minnie) Carpenter. They had four sons: Frank born right after their marriage, Ralph in 1875, Shirley in 1881 and Harry born 19 years after their marriage when they were in their mid to late forties.
Joseph was a farmer his whole life.
He died on April 16, 1917 at age 73, and is buried in White Hall Cemetery, the first corner on the left from the main entrance,
