Birth: Jan. 30, 1818
Henry County
Kentucky, USA
Death: Jan. 9, 1880
Springfield
Lane County
Oregon, USA

Published Saturday, January 17, 1880 in the The Oregon State Journal (Eugene, OR)

Elder G. W. Bond died at his home near Eugene, Friday January 9th, at 11 o'clock, p.m. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church on Sunday last at one o'clock; the sermon by Elder J. C. Richardson, assisted in the service by the pastor of the city. From the Church the body was taken to the Odd Fellow's Cemetery and interred. Elder Bond was an old citizen of our State and county. He settled on the place where he died, about twenty-five years ago, and lived there until his death. He was born in Kentucky, January 20th, 1818; he moved to Iowa, where he lived for a number of years, when he immigrated to Oregon and settled as above mentioned.

During all the time of his residence here, he has lived an irreproachable life, bore a high reputation for strict integrity of character and honorable dealing. Lane county has had no more honorable citizen nor one more favorably known or more highly esteemed in the wide circle of his acquaintance. In his death the community has been bereft of a member who might well be a model of integrity for the rising generation.

As a Christian he was honored and beloved by his brethren and respected by the entire community. His religion was something more than a profession of his life; it was a fact in his whole life. He walked “worthy of the vocation wherewith he was called,” and was honored in his religious profession because his life agreed with it. As a preacher he was of superior ability. Without the advantage of education in the beginning of his ministry, he struggled against difficulties and surmounted them, rising by his own efforts and against great disadvantages to eminence. His denomination has lost an able champion, and the whole religious community suffered the loss of “a good minister of Jesus Christ.”

His physician was constant and faithful in his attendance, but the disease was beyond his reach. He died of disease of the heart and during his sickness suffered much, but he bore it all with fortitude and christian resignation, and exemplified the fact that the gospel which he had preached to others was abundantly able to sustain him in the hour of death. He passed away peacefully and triumphantly. Verily, “blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.” His memory will be embalmed in many hearts as a rich legacy, illustrating the beauty of Christian life and the triumphant Christian death.
