Jacob Manly Cantey Breaker was born on July 25, 1824 in South Carolina, to Lewis Frederick and Martha Cantey Breaker. He had eleven siblings and only 9 lived to adulthood and they were Eliza Prince, Mary Judith, George W., Martha C., William, Lewis R., Emeline Reardon, and James Henry Breaker. Jacob was named after a Baptist preacher in Charleston, Basil Manly.
In 1828 his family moved from Camden, South Carolina to Key West, Florida to start a new business. Jacobs father, Lewis was born in Germany. He was a deacon in the church in Camden and was licensed to preach but never announced himself as a minister of the Baptist church. As Jacob matured, his father noticed his attraction for the open water. The family had already lost a son to the sea and Lewis made sure his son would not become a sailor. At the age of sixteen, Jacob was sent to Camden to be educated. On June 14, 1840, Jacob was baptized and he had a deep desire to devote his life to the ministry. Both his parents died in 1842. In 1846, Jacob graduated from Furman Literary and Theological Instiution, Fairfield, South Carolina. At that time he was assistant pastor in Chesterville.
On October 11, 1848, In Greenville, South Carolina, Jacob married Emma Juliette Juhan. Together they had ten children and they were Manly Juhan, George Howe, Emma Henrietta, Henry Cantey, Eliza Prince, Etta Hornby, Anna Bourdeaux, Victoria Claudia, Emily Juhan, and Lewis Frederick.
