Mary Jane was born in the original town of Dillon, Colorado, which is now under Lake Dillon. In spite of polio as child leaving her in braces for life she graduated from the University of Colorado with a bachelor's degree in history and went on to earn her law degree also from CU. She was the only woman to graduate from the UC law school in 1942. She served as an attorney for the Federal Government during WWII, and after private practice in Colorado Springs. It was in Washington, D.C. where she met her former husband Harry Tuell, also a Social Security Administrative Law Judge. They had one daughter Doris May now Dara Tuell.
