Charles R. Eckhardt, 68, of 2315 Ontario Ave., died peacefully at his home Wednesday evening, Nov. 15, 2000 with his family at his side.
Charlie was born March 22, 1932 in Sheboygan to the late Casper and Sophia (Weber) Eckhardt. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Kohler High School, Class of 1950.
He served his contry in the U.S. Air Force as a weatherman in Iwo Jima during the Korean War.
Chasrle was letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for many years until his retirement in 1988.
Charlie has left us with a legacy of music. Although the tuba and trumpet were Charlie's primary instruments, he also played bass guitar, clarinet, sax, piano, string bass and others. A well-known musician, Charlie played with Joe and Joanie Bifano, Howard Schneider, Carl Laack, Reggie Barber, Roger Mueller, Jan Garber, Jump N Jive Cats, Gene Heir, Marvin Hemb, Lakeshore Grenadiers, Dave Sullivan, Don Vandre, the Peptones, Sheboygan Municipal Band, Sheboygan Symphony, and countless other groups. Music was always a major poart of Charlie's life. He wrote and arranged music for many of the groups he performed with, including his own band, Elam City Dutchmen.
He also composed towo large-scale compositions, "Grand Sophia March" and "Lake Michigan Suite", which were performed by the Sheboygan Municipal Band, conducted by Bill Haack.
In 1993, Charlie built and operated the CCR Recording Studio, where he engineered and produced recordings of various local bands and musicians.
Survivors include nine children, Kathleen and Bob Tome of Rock Falls, Ill., Linda Clark of Panama City Beach, Fla., Kurt and Linda Eckhardt of Newtown, Conn., Tamara and Joe Kopplinger of Manitowoc, Corinne Bourret of Sheboygan, Charles and Evelyn Eckhardt of Fish Creek, Michael and Rhonda Eckhardt of Rockford, Ill., Thomas and Karen Ekhardt of Sheboygan and Elizabeth Eckhardt of Madison, Wis.: grandchildren, Brianna, Hannah, Karissa, Kayley, Holly, Samantha, Charlie, Michelle, Dustin, Nora, and Gwen; a brother, William (Roberta) Eckhardt and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; tow sisters, Agnes (David) Hartmann and Dorothy Eckhardt and a brother, Ervin (Faye) Eckhardt.
One of Charlie's strengths was his inner drive. This was never more apparent than when he designed and built his own home. Chrlie was a voracious reader and enjoyed topics such as archeology, astronomy, geology, anthropology, philosophy, and science fiction. He instilled in his children his quest for learning and challenged them "to do their best".
Although he described himself as an irascible curmudgeon, underneath his cynical shell was a humorous intellectual, always poking fun at himself and the world around him. He was loved dearly and will be truly missed.
Dad, we hope that now you can actually discuss the complexities of the cosmos with Copernicus, Saga, Kepler, et al.
A memorial gathering and visitation will be held at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. In lieu of flower, contributions to the memorial fund established in his name would be appreciated.
