The Rev. J.W.W.Carter was born in Clermont Co., OH. Nov. 25, 1819. His early life was occupied in teaching school. He was married in 1840 to Elizabeth McGohan, who died July 1841. On August 30, 1842 he was married to Malina Sargent. This marriage was blessed with eight children-five sons and three daughters. Two sons died in infancy. William S. died in 1874 aged twenty-eight years. In 1845 the deceased moved to Mason Co., IL. where he was licensed to preach in the Methodist-Episcopal Church, Peter Cartwright officiating. He united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1848. At the Spring Session of Sangamon Presbytery, of the same year, he was licensed to preach, and at the Fall Session he was ordained. During the ten years succeeding his ordination, his time was largely occupied in doing pioneer mission work, which at that time constituted the training-school for the young prophets in the ministry of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His first regular pastorate was Foster Point in Rushville Presbytery, beginning in 1858, and lasting two years. In 1860 he became pastor of Walnut Grove congregation. This pastorate lasted eight years. In 1869 he took charge of the Biggsville congregation and preached for them two years. Early in 1871 he came to Pottawattomie County, IA and on April 12, 1871 he organized the Macedonia congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, remaining pastor until April 1887, a period of sixteen years. In 1887 he became pastor of Pleasant Grove congregation in Des Moines county, IA and served them two years. This was his last regular work in the ministry. He returned to Macedonia in 1889.
On September 19, 1890 his beloved companion died, after a union with him of forty-eight years. After an illness of one week he died on Christmas morning, 1894, aged seventy-five years and one month. West Iowa Presbytery, in his death, has suffered a serious loss. He had stood as its wisest counsellor for the last twenty-three years. The funeral service was onducted by the writer, (Rev. W.C. McClelland) assisted by the Rev. James Brown, former pastor at Macedonia. Published in The Saint Louis Observer January 31, 1895
