Chiquita was my father-in-law Don's dog. She definitely had a mind of her own. I do believe she was one of the most spoiled dogs ever...
She loved her Master so much. She was very tuned into his feelings. They were together non-stop. She even got to ride in his Cadillac convertible. His own kids rarely got to ride in that car. She was a front-seat passenger.
Chiquita ran that household. She had her own porcelain plates for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food must be cut in tiny pieces for her liking. She had to eat at the same time as everyone else. She didn't want to take a handout at the table. She wanted it placed on her plate next to the table like everyone else. Also, she must have her walks at the same times everyday...
Chiquita was a good dog. I can't say anything bad about her except she was aloof sometimes. She had quite the diva attitude. She loved her immediate family to pieces and accepted us visitors for awhile. She especially liked my hubby and our son. I think it was because they both are so much like Jim's father. Usually animals like me, not Jim. This dog, however, was different...
The biggest challenge in her life was taking care of Don when he was ill with cancer. She was with him constantly. No one got by her without being noticed. She laid with him in bed. She sat with him in his chair. She followed him out to the kitchen. She was the one that was with him when he passed. She knew what was going to happen. She wouldn't leave his side. She was in bed with him at the time. She wouldn't leave him even after...She was in a state of depression for a long time. She was never the same after that night....
She grew more attached to her "mom", my mother-in-law. They were very close after Don died. I don't think it was the same relationship of course, but there was definitely love for each other.
I'm not really sure what the cause of her passing was. I believe it was a heart condition. I just know it is very hard for my mother-in-law. She has an empty house now. She misses her companionship...
Rest in peace, Chiquita...
