Learn about upgrading this memorial...
Birth: Sep. 1, 1865, Germany
Death: Oct. 7, 1952
Jerauld County
South Dakota, USA

Engel Marie Karolin Bartels, who went by "Lena" was born in Meerbeck, Germany and baptized at the St. Bartholomew Church in Meerbeck. She was the second of five children born to "Henry" and "Marie" (Krömer) Bartels; only she and her older brother Fred were born in Germany. The family, facing increasing financial hardship, immigrated to America, arriving 12 Apr 1870, following the footsteps of her Uncle Fred Bartels. They initially went to Will County, Illinois where her younger siblings William, Minna, and Henry were born. After a few years they moved to Saline County, Nebraska, again following her Uncle Fred Bartels. Her sister Minna died shortly after this move, and is buried in the old church cemetery which is now referred to as "Old Zion".

In the area close to them was another Bartels' family who were related but not closely. It was from this Bartels' family that Lena chose her husband, Christoph August Conrad Gottlieb Bartels (who went by August), and they married on 11 Jun 1882 at the Zion Lutheran Church in their rural neighborhood. All eleven of Lena and August's children were born here, in Saline County, Nebraska:
1. August H (23 Oct 1883-28 Jun 1943)
2. Marie (born and died 1886)
3. Sophia (Feb 1887-Dec 1978)
4. Fredrich (b. 10 Mar 1889)
5. Paulena S. (21 Mar 1891-22 May 1981)
6. Ida L. (4 Dec 1892-15 Sep 1973)
7. Anna W. (28 Apr 1895-Nov. 1977)
8. Albert John (5 Feb 1898-Jan 1981)
9. Martin William (8 Apr 1900-Apr 1981)
10. Herman C (b. 1902)
11. Lydia (31 Jan 1905-16 May 1936)

In 1906 the family moved to Alpena, Jerauld County, South Dakota, and lived in Jerauld County until their deaths.

The following is her obituary, published in the Huronite and Daily Plainsman (Huron, South Dakota) on 16 Oct. 1952 (page 2, column 8):
