Joseph was the son of Joseph Butala (1879-1947) and Annie nee Musich (1882-1932) who married in Calumet on September 16, 1903. Both of the parents were immigrants from Slovenia; the father was a copper miner. The family subsequently moved to Montana. Joseph and Annie's other children included: Anne (c. 1905-1990), Joseph (c.1907-), John (c.1908-1953), Louis (1910-1997), and Angelina (1913-2000). Joseph's mother Annie died in 1932 and his father Joseph died in 1947.
