Benjamin G Barnes Sr was born in 1826 in Hancock CO GA. His parents were Benjamin Barnes and Amey Williamson Barnes. He first married Sarah Middlebrooks in Hancock CO GA and had 2 children: Henry Albert and Sarah A. It is not known if his wife died before he moved to Alabama or shortly thereafter. He was shown with no wife in the 1860 census of Montgomery CO AL. He bought land just east of Downing and married Elizabeth Ellisor on 6-4-1861. C T Alford signed his marriage bond and they were married by Rev Robert Smilie. Benjamin joined the Confederate Army in April of 1862 as a member of Co. B, 51 Alabama Calvary. His horse was valued at $300. He served until his capture in Raleigh NC in Sept 1865.
