Gustav was born in Barkag (Barkagarden), Uvered, Skaraborg, Sweden. He was the son of Anders Johnasson (1809-1887) and Annika Johnasdotter (1808-1886). Gustav had a brother Frdrik b 1836, and a sister Emilie Maja (1848-1849). Gustav married Anna Marie Magnusdotter 28 Dec 1868 in Levene Kryka, Uvered, Skaraborg (or Skaraborg lan), Sweden. The 1900 census indicates that Gustav immigrated in 1872. His wife arrived three years later (1875) with their three children. He lived in the Bohemian Flats area of Minneapolis, MN at 47 Cooper Street. He was a laborer working at a lumberyard in 1880, as a switchman for the railroad in 1895, as a watchman in 1905, and as a flagman for the railroad in 1910. His death certificate lists his occupation as "violinist & railroad worker."
