Birth: Feb. 1, 1760
Sussex County
New Jersey, USA
Death: Mar. 22, 1842
DeKalb County
Tennessee, USA

Leonard Fite was born 1 Feb 1760, the son of Johannes Vogt (Fite) and Catharine --- in Sussex County, New Jersey. His age is recorded in the church book of St James Lutheran Church, also known as the old "Straw Church". He enlisted as a young man into the Revolutionary Army in the New Jersey Militia, serving 13 months as follows: Two months under Capt. John Hazlett, four months under Capt. James Anderson, two months under Capt. Joseph Mackey, five months under a Captain, whose name he cannot remember. The entire thirteen months was served under Col. McKinney's command.

After the close of the war, at the age of 21, Leonard married Margareth "Peggy" Crose of Oxford, New Jersey, April 12, 1781. The family moved to Lincoln County, North Carolina about 1796 along with his brother, John Fite, and sister, Christina Lamberson. They lived in North Carolina, approx. nine years, then moved on to enter Tennessee near "Nash's Lick" and on to Smith County, Tennessee. He cleared the land and built the home in which his five youngest children were born, making a total of twelve children; the youngest having died in infancy.

Leonard applied for his war pension, November 27, 1832 at the age of 72. He died on 22 Mar 1842, in DeKalb County, Tennessee. After his death, his wife "Peggy" applied for a widow's pension based on Leonard's service. Due to an issue of proof of his entire thirteen months service, and her being unable to produce a marriage certificate, Peggy had trouble receiving his full pension. Due to her determination of not giving up, the resulting pension file is over ninety pages of affidavits and other information. Peggy finally gets her full $43.33 pension reinstated.

The above was taken from information found in Leonard Fite's Rev. pension file and "The Fite Families in the United States."
