Jack Evans Baker, 81

Jack passed away March 1, 2013, in Tumwater, Washington, at the age of 81. he was born April 29, 1931 to Bud and Edith (Evans) Baker in Harrah, Washington. He attended Wapato Grade School until fifth grade. In 1942, the family moved to Tenino where Jack entered sixth grade and continued until graduating early from Tenino High School in 1949.
Jack began his service in the U.S. Navy on April 12, 1949, and he came home after boot camp for high school graduation exercises.
Jack married Shirley Reynolds on September 4, 1954 at Tenino Presbyterian Church. After fulfilling his three-year military duty, plus a "Truman Year," Jack was honorably discharged with the rank of Machinist Mate Third Class on August 29, 1953. He returned to Tenino and began work with the State of Washington, Planning and Survey. In June 1956, he transferred to District 3. He became a foreman in 1964 and Superintendent in 1976. He retired in March 1980 at the age of 48.
After retiring, he worked at many different jobs, finding it nice to experience different lines of work. He ended up driving a log truck, and enjoyed being out in the woods and working with equipment. His whole life was based on a steady work ethic. He really enjoyed being able to help his two sons with their projects, and was always available. He left his sons a legacy of knowledge and many skills.
Jack was a hard worker and always and some project going on outside regular work hours. He especially enjoyed his motorcycle. He, Shirley, and good friends toured many hundreds of miles together. He instilled a love of motorcycles in his sons.
Jack was a life member of Masonic Lodge #1 in Olympia.
he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley; sons, Stacey (Trish) and Bruce (Dwee), two grandchildren; five great grandchildren; brother, Bob (Barbara); and nieces and nephews. He was much loved by his wife and sons, and will be missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Forest Grove Cemetery in Tenino, Washington. A potluck celebration of life will follow at 4: p.m. at the Littlerock Fire Station, 10828 Littlerock Rd. SW, Olympia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to South Sound Alzheimer's Council.
