Son of Dewey and Bertha Beulah Thomas Abernathy. He was a United States Army veteran serving in the 82nd Air Borne Division just prior to the Korean War in Europe and Panama and was a member of the 325th Infantry Regiment in "Exercise Carib-ex and Ria Selva" in the Canal Zone. He served as Pope County Sheriff from 1971 to 1976 and was chairman of the Arkansas Sheriff's Committee when they established the Arkansas Sheriffs' Boys and Girls Ranches. He served as Pope County Judge from 1983 to 1988. He was a member of the Gumlog Fellowship Church, Russellville and Dover Masonic Lodges, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a former member of the Pope County Mounted Patrol where he served as the commander, Arkansas Sheriffs Association, National Advisory Council of Law Enforcement and the Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Vernon Abernathy; and a sister, Deanie Abernathy Hegeman.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Gibson Abernathy of Russellville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindra and Russell Roberson of Russellville and Belinda and David Ferguson of Jonesboro; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Lloyd Atkinson of Russellville; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Yvonne and Hurlan Muncy of Appleton and Mrs. James Gibson of Russellville; and five grandchildren, Jake and Luke Ferguson, both of Jonesboro; and Kyle, Rhett and Brayli Roberson, all of Russellville.
