James Burrow "Burr" Hines Gray migrated in 1850 from Guilford Co., North Carolina, to Independence Co., Arkansas, with his father.
A member of the C.S.A., he enlisted July 4, 1864, and served under Reg. Col. Lowe, then under Reg. Col. Barnia Ford. His company surrendered at Jacksonport, Arkansas, on June 5, 1865.
He was a planter and a Methodist-Protestant circuit-rider and minister.
He wrote a journal of his family's migration to Arkansas.
He also served as postmaster of Hickory Valley, Arkansas.

He married three times:
1) m. 10 Jan 1872 Rachel Lucretia Lewis (She died 24 Oct 1873 prob. following childbirth)
2) m. 15 Feb 1877 Susannah F. Wooldridge (She died 26 Jul 1910 after falling off her horse)
3) m. 18 Sep 1912 Mrs. Verginia Smalley
