George Dallas Follmer was one of ten children of Ralph Wallace Follmer and Marie (Yunker) Follmer. George was born in the family house at Oak, Nebraska, on December 13, 1914.
He grew up at Oak and attended school at Oak and Nelson. He worked for area farmers in the 30's. He attended barber college in Lincoln in 1938. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and then joined the army. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army serving with the 103rd infantry in the Pacific Theater during WWII. The victory day stories after WWII remained with him through his life.
After returning home from the army, he married Virginia Burkett on January 9, 1951, in Superior, Nebraska. They made their home in Green River, Wyoming. He worked for the railroad as a carpenter for over 30 years. He was a member of the maintenance of way union with the railroad and the Union Pacific Old Timers Club. He was a member of the Catholic Church and life-time member of the Green River Knights of Columbus. He was always helping his neighbors with carpentery (sic) projects. His brothers, sisters and nephews were very important to him. His nieces and nephews enjoyed his visits and the sacks of candy he would bring them.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Virginia who died on March 31, 1988; two brothers, Ralph, Jr. and Dick; two sisters, Ellen Friend and Catherine Heinz.
He is survived by three sisters, Jean and her husband Frank Radosevich of Milford, Iowa, Faith and her husband Ben Crafasi of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mary Ann and her husband Joe Troia of Bellevue, Nebraska; two brothers, Donald and his wife Muriel of Nelson and Jerry and his wife Bernita of Bellevue, Nebraska; many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.
George passed away at his home in Green River, Wyoming, on April 12, 1988, at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 9 days.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 18, 1988, 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nelson, Nebraska. Father Frank Machovec officiated. Organist Lorraine Rempe accompanied the congregational hymns. Casketbearers were Jim Troia, Ron Follmer, Gary Follmer, Ervin Heinz, Dick Friend and Dan Follmer. Honorary pallbearers were Sam Troia, John Follmer, Craig Follmer, Mark Follmer, Dennis Follmer and Darin Myers. Burial with military rites was at the Nelson Cemetery.
Klawitter-Price Funeral Home, Nelson, was in charge of arrangements.
