Luigina was born in Italy but was raised in San Francisco from about age 5 to age 12 or 13 when the family went back to Italy. She was known in Calciaia as the woman who spoke English.

During WWII she organized and ran an English Library for English speaking G.I.s in Italy. Her work was well known enough that she got a letter from Elenore Roosevelt, as well as visits from celebrities who were in the area entertaining soldiers.
