I met Rick through a Star Trek fan club back in 1993. STARFLEET International is a group dedicated to community service, family, friends and fun. Rick had founded a chapter in Atchison Kansas and I met him at one of the events. He and I struck up a friendship that lasted for the rest of his life.
I lived in Arkansas at the time, but we kept in touch on the net as often as we could. Many events brought him down to Arkansas and many took me to the Kansas City area. We laughed and joked about everything. And we did things like March of Dimes and Habitat for Humanity. We would go to Star Trek conventions and share many a meal together.
I moved to Leavenworth in 1996 and we began a joint venture of raising money for our clubs at the Atchison Flea Market held twice each year. I would cook my famous bbq brisket and we would sell sandwiches, soda, chips and then started doing wax hands.
In 2002, a huge lump appeared under his left eye. It swelled up quite a bit to the point where they had to operate and discovered cancer. After removing a good part of his jaw, Rick showed good signs of making a full recovery.
We continued our club activities, but it was apparent that the cancer had returned a year later. Rick knew his time was limited, so he did everything he could to live it to the fullest.
I spent an evening with him in late April watching Star Trek:First Contact. He had written out a list of things he wanted to do before he left this world, and one of them was to sit down and watch this movie again and see the deleted scenes. I wanted to make sure that one was fulfilled. That same evening, I was happy to present him his new rank of Rear Admiral that I had secretly made sure happened as well before it was too late.
On May 30th, I recieved a call from his wife Jocelyn that Rick seemed to have taken a turn for the worse. We drove up and spent the night up there in Atchison, keeping watch and making sure Rick was comfortable.
About 1:30am on May 31st, Rick slipped away to that new journey on the other side. We all had told him it was ok, and he made the leap.
I was proud to call Rick my brother.....while we weren't blood related, we were indeed brothers.
I miss my brother, but know I will see him again on the other side.
