John W. Ashton was born in Oldham, Lancashire, England. He came to this country when he was about 18 or 19 years old and worked in the mills as a spinner in Newmarket, NH. While he worked there he met and eventually married a woman by the name of Martha Willis. She was also from England and after they married they returned to England for a visit. John returned to the states with the intention that Martha would soon follow after visiting with family. She never did return and while they were in England she had concieved a child with John. John did not return to England and eventually the couple divorced and he married Elizabeth N. Slocum.
John was a well known real estate man and a member of the firm of Ashton and Bentley. The couple lived and raised a family in New Bedford. John was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the common council from Ward Six. He was also a member of the Eureka lodge of Masons of New Bedford and the Elks.
After his death, his son from England was informed of the death of his father and able to claim part of John's estate.
