Two brothers, Thomas and William Durham, were members of a family that moved from New Jersey to Ohio in the early 1830s. Thomas and William came to California about 1854 and moved to San Mateo County in September 1855.

In 1857, they opened up the first wagon road to the skyline. The brother returned to Ohio to bring other members of the family here, including a younger brother, Ott, who married Martha Ellen Teague onDecember 25, 1873. William married Josephine Raiston Moore on February 28, 1870. Thomas remained a bachelor and claimed to have been the first person to cast a vote in San Mateo County.
