Per Daniel's daughter Mrytle Briggs Reynolds: Dad was left an orphan when about 11 years old. His mother died when she was not very old. His father William was accidentally killed by a runaway team of horses. He was 95 and deaf at the time and did not hear the team coming. He was walking for exercise. William was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. My father was a real scotchman, very sensitive, hot temper, but always had it under perfect control. He owned 40 acres at Dundee, Delaware County, IA, and then moved to Forestville, Delaware County, IA. At Forestville ran a blacksmith and wagon shop. The family lived above the shop.

1850 census has Daniel, his wife Sarah, and infant daughter Mary residing in Brooklyn Twp, Lee Co., Illinois. Mary was born in Illinois.
A son Henry is born in Illinois in 1850 or 1851. Then the family moves back to Vermont sometime between 1851 and 1854 when son George is born. Sons Edgar b 1855 in Vermont and Levi b 1857 are born in Monkton, Addison County, Vermont.
In 1860 the Daniel, Sarah and children Mary, Henry, George, Edgar/Edwin, and Levi are residing in Wyocena, Columbia County, Wisconsin.
Then sometime between 1860 and 1863 they return to Illinois where son Hiram is b. 1863.

Daniel was part of the Grand Army of the Republic and saw service during the Civil War as a private in Company G, 42nd Illinois,Infantry, enlisting on October 18, 1864 at Stockton, IL, and discharged at Cairo, IL, June 18, 1865.
He was enrolled as a substitute for John Clay, who paid Daniel to take his place in the war.

The censuses from 1870 until his death lists Daniel in Richland Township, Delaware county, IA. (which would be where the Forestville settlement was located) Note: his wife's parents and siblings were residing in this area in the 1860 census, while it appears Daniel and Sarah were still in Illinois. Daniel's in-laws were residing at Serena, Lasalle county, IL in 1850

WPA records indicate that Daniel Briggs once had a GAR stone (without any dates) at Forestville Cemetery. There is no stone.

He died suddenly of an asthma attack, resulting in heart failure on Monday, Feb. 27, 1905, while at the county jail. Police who mistakenly thought Daniel was intoxicated, were getting ready to take him back to the the soldiers' home in Marshalltown, Marshall County, IA, where he had been since 1903. He was 89 years and 12 days old. Rev. Meek of the Wesleyan Methodist church officiated at the funeral held on Wed. at the Methodist church in Dundee, IA, at 2:00 p.m.

In his civil war military records his is described as 5',3" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair and occupation when enrolled blacksmith.

Per a write up in the Evening Times-Republican (Marshalltown, IA) March 2, 1905 and Feb. 28, 1905:
Daniel's grandfather lived to be 111 years old, and Daniel's father died at age 104, each of the latter's brothers lived to be over 100. Daniel had two brothers who died at ages 94 and 92. The record of old age in this family was told by Daniel's son George Briggs who arrived in Marshalltown the morning of Feb. 28, 1905, and that night accompanied his father's body home, where the funeral was held.
