Josephine (Jote) Davies was born early Christmas morning to Brigham and Primrose Lee Davies. As a very young child she was involved in an accident were the richochet of a sling-shot's rock hit her in the right eye. The accident left her permanently blind in that eye.

Just before her sixth birthday, her family experienced a terrible blow. Her mother died from typhoid fever on October 6, 1890. Just two weeks later on October 22nd, her maternal grandfather (Thomas Lee) died. Two days later her baby sister (Ethel) also died from typhoid fever. Her grandfather and baby sister were buried on the same day in the Tooele, Utah cemetery.

On June 30, 1891, Jote's father married the widow Elizabeth Griffith Maxwell. She brought to the marriage two sons from her previous marriage. In susequent years, Brigham and Elizabeth added five additional children to this family.

Jote married Edward Franklin Brown at her father's home in Lake Point, Utah on June 14, 1906. In their young married life they lived in Salt Lake City and Milton, Idaho. Their first two children (Helen and Franklin Davies) were born during this time. Approximately 1912, the family moved back to Lake Point Utah. In the following years, three additional children were added to the family (Carol Elizabeth, Josephine and Mary Ethel).

In August 1926 Jote and Edward's family moved to Pomona, California. In Jote's own words, "...arrived in Pomona late Saturday night in a heavy fog. Whenever I see the picture 'Grapes of Wrath', I can see us when we landed in California."

Jote and Edward were active in the various LDS wards where they lived (Matthews, Maywood & Grant Wards). Jote served in various callings like primary teacher, Relief Society President and visiting teacher. She also worked in genealogy. She joined and served in the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

Edward passed away on August 8, 1961 after 55 years of marriage. Jote carried on in her home until 1971 when she decided to enter a rest home. She passed away September 21, 1974 and is buried between her husband and sister, Primrose.
