Lester St. Clair Birch was born to Will and Clara Wehl Birch september 13, 1882 at Scottsville, Ks, and passed away at the Mitchell County hospital, Beloit, Ks, May 27, 1973. He lived all his life on the farm where he was born until he retired from the farm in March of 1970 to Beloit. He attended Center School in Lulu township and was graduated from the Scottsville High School.

He was an active member of the Fairview Christian Church until it was discontinued. Later he became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Beloit. He was interested in civic affairs, serving on various committees. He was township committeeman for Lulu township for 18 years.

On September 8, 1915 he was married to Edna Koch at Beloit. To this marriage was born two sons, Bill and Milford. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Stella Allen, a brother, Dallas and his son Aviation Cadet Milford D. Birch.

He is survived by his wife Edna, of the home, a son Bill and his wife, Loraine, Walsenburg, Colo., and three grandchildren, Kathy, Steven, and Martin Birch.

Pastor Edward A. Piper conducted funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 1973 at McDonald's Chapel. Music was furnished by soloist, Mrs. Robert Petterson with Mrs. Donald Porter as organist. Casket bearers were Howard Abernethy, James Cady,Richard Jostes, Charles V. Hartman, Sam Motes, and Ervin Ross. Caring for flowers were Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Snyder. Interment was in the Scottsville cemetery.

Out of town relatives attending the service were: Mr. & Mrs. Bill B. Birch and Martin of Walsenburg, Colo; Kathy Birch, Cambridge, Mass; Esther Berneking, Mr. & Mrs. Wybern Berneking, Formoso; Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Berneking, Brian & Martin, Milford, Mr. & Mrs. Jim Jensby, Hardy, Nebr; Mr. & Mrs. Hobart Green, Jamestown; Mrs. Mildred Ross, Lincoln; and Mr. & Mrs. Mike Simmons, Osborne.
