Monroe John Bittner was born on February 12, 1933 in Lee County, Texas to Alvin William & Wilhelmine "Minnie" (Schultz) Bittner. He was baptized on March 4, 1933 and confirmed on March 30, 1947 at Christ Lutheran Church in Loebau, Texas. Monroe was united in marriage to Bernice Goerlitz on February 9, 1957 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings by Rev. Fred Mgebroff. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Larry & Cathy.

Monroe worked for nearly 40 years at Bluebonnet Electric and was an active member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings where he served as an usher and on the church council. He was also a former director of the Giddings Sons of Herman Lodge #54 and a former member of the Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department. He played fast-pitch softball and was a member of the Loebau and LCRA teams. Monroe enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, playing dominoes, gardening, working cattle at his farm and sitting at the railroad tracks watching the trains. Most of all, he looked forward to spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandson.

Monroe passed away the evening of Thursday, May 23, 2013 at his home in Giddings.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin & Minnie Bittner; his parents-in-law, Clemons & Julia Goerlitz; his sisters, Frieda Fritsche & her husband, Gilbert, Bernice Friedrich & her husband, Milton, Florence Fischer & her husband, Elmer, Frances Kappler Ganske and her husbands, Milton Kappler & Willie Ganske and Laura Hosea; his brothers, Martin Bittner & his wife, Evelyn and Milton Bittner; brothers-in-law, Marvin Fritsche and Leroy Goerlitz; sister-in-law, Gladys Medack & her husband, Paul; niece, Cindy Goerlitz and a nephew, Leslie Bittner.

Monroe is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bernice Bittner of Giddings; son and daughter-in-law, Larry & Carol Bittner of Giddings; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy & Terry Harrel of Uvalde; four grandchildren, Carrie Hinze & her husband, John of Northrup, Laurie Kasper & her husband, Kyle of Giddings, Stacy Kessler & her husband, Jason of Giddings and Cody Harrel of Uvalde; great grandson, Kaden Kasper of Giddings; step grandchildren, Whitney & Travis; sister, Gladys Fritsche of Loebau; brothers-in-law, Herbert Hosea of Giddings and Harley Goerlitz & his wife, Shirley of Giddings; sister-in-law, Gerline Kieschnick & her husband, Floyd of Giddings as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 27, 2013 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Jeremy Walloch officiating. Burial will follow in the Giddings City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 26, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday, May 27, 2013 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation Sunday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Martin Luther Lutheran Church General Fund, 573 North Main, Giddings, Texas 78942 or to the charity of one's choice.
