Robert W. Alexander was born March 16, 1918 in Corvallis, Oregon, and was educated as a landscape architect, graduating from the University of Oregon.
During World War II, he served in North Africa, Italy, and Southern France as a glider pilot.
While still in Rome after the war, he met Maria, and they married there in 1946. He studied oil painting in Rome at the "Accademia delle BelleArti." Although he continued painting during his career at San Jose State University, his real passion was flying small light airplanes and gliders. After retirement he built a small glider, later donating it to a flight school.
In his later years, he wrote poetry, some of which was published.
He and Maria traveled extensively all over the world. They were married for 66 years and lived in Davis, California since 1994.
Robert was buried at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on Thursday, April 12, 2012.
