Benjamina G. Ballesteros, "Benjie" to family and friends, passed away July 12, 2011, at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Vallejo. She was born June 27, 1944, in Doyong, Calasiao, Pangasinan, Philippines, the daughter of Pedro and Deonisia Gonzales.
Benjie attended grade school in her hometown, high school in Dagupan City and Baguio Tech College in Baguio City. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education at the University of Pangasinan. As a teacher by profession, she taught in public schools in Manila and Pangasinan before joining her husband, Manny, on his various Navy assignments, residing in Annapolis, MD, Norfolk, VA, Kingsville, TX and Yokusuka, Japan.
Benjie worked as sales representative at the Navy Exchange in Annapolis, accounting technician at Sears when in Norfolk, as a laboratory tech when in Texas, a library tech and education specialist with Department of Defense when in Yokosuka, Japan. Her 27 years with the U.S. federal government includes being a safety specialist with the U.S. Army Base in Oakland and as a business management specialist with the U.S. Forest Service in Vallejo, CA.
Very active with the community, Benjie was a former treasurer of Fil-American Retired Armed Forces Association. She served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Vincent Ferrer Church and St. Basil the Great Church; she was also a lector and choir member. She was a member of the Vallejo Peoples Garden, planting and harvested fruits and vegetables for the homeless and food banks.
Concerned with the environmental issues, she participated with the bi-annual coastal cleanup of the beaches and waterfront of Vallejo.
Benjie enjoyed traveling to different places like Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii. She enjoyed driving with her husband to different states of the Union. She liked to cook and play with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Manny; twin sons, Norman (Michelle) and Oliver (Sheryl); along with five grandchildren, Ryan, Nya Marie, Christian Jaime, Angel and Kaelyn; brothers, Pat (Linda) and Jose (Rose); sisters, Milagros (Gregorio), Caridad (Filemon) and Esperanza (Eugene); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held at Colonial Chapels, 1000 Redwood St., Vallejo 94590 on Sunday, July 17, 2011, with a Vigil that evening. Funeral Mass was on Monday, July 18, at 10 a.m., at Saint Vincent Ferrer Church, 925 Sacramento St., Vallejo, CA 94590. Private interment at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon, CA.
