A memorial service for John M. Hocking, 81, was held Monday in the First United Methodist Church, 4845 Broxton Ave., Riverside, Calif. He died at his home on Thursday, June 15, 1995 of cancer. His sons and grandsons served as pall bearers and gave eulogies during the service. Born in Catesby, Okla., Sep. 19, 1913, he moved to Booker (Texas) with the family in 1924. Then the family moved to Riverside in 1926 to raise citrus fruit. John graduated from Poly High School there in 1931. He returned to the Hocking farm three and one-half miles northwest of Booker in 1931 and took over the farming for his father plus other Hocking properties at the age of 17. He married Dellaurs Cunningham on Aug. 5, 1934. They had two children, John Ray and Dennis. While in Texas, John began his lifetime of service to boards, serving as president of the Huntoon School District, president of the Booker School Board, Booker Equity and Booker Methodist Church board. In 1952, he moved his family to Riverside where he became very successful as a Sunkist orange grower and continued his community service on boards. He served on several Citrus Co-op boards and First United Methodist Church board, always as president, before his term expired. He was president of Gage Canal from 1975 to 1979, when he became general manager and president of the canal until he retired in 1993 due to failing health. Gage Canal is the water system for the citrus groves of Riverside.
