Obituary was printed in the Thursday August 19, 1915 edition of The Journal Transcript as follows: "Gilbert S. Merrill died very suddenly early Sunday morning. He was stricken at Paper Mill B of the International Paper Company's local plant where he was a night boss. Mr. Merrill was found by Owen Severance, a fellow employee, dying upon the floor. Two physicians were summoned but he passed away before their arrival. Death was due to valvular disease of the heart. He had been a sufferer from this disease for about two years. Mr. Merrill was one of the best known papermakers in town. He had lived here for the past 36 years. He was born in Cumberland Centre, Maine, and was 70 years and five months old. He was a son of Samuel and Hannah (Warren) Merrill. He came to Franklin from his birthplace. Besides his wife he leaves three sons, Charles and Harry of Nashua and Fred C. of Portsmouth; two daughters, Marguerite, a student at the New Hampshire College, and Bernice of this City. Funeral services were held from the family home on Central Street, Wednesday afternoon, Rev. James P. Harper, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating. Interment took place in the Franklin Cemetery, Undertaker H. L. Young having charge. The bearers were Fred C. Merrill, Harry Merrill, Charles Merrill, David Carroll, Eben G. Peabody, and J. Edward Hoegstrom."
