Abraham Lippincott of Perry County, Illinois married Penepole P. Fountain at Benton, Franklin Co., Ill on Nov 1, 1859. Penelope was age 21 in 1863 (born about '42). Abraham and Penelope had one child, a daughter named Lilly A. Lippincott on Sep 4, 1860. He was 27 years old when he enrolled as a private in Company A, 81st Ill Infantry on August 1, 1862 at Camp Anna, IL. He was 5'6" tall and a former merchant. He was made the chief clerk for the adjutant on 22 Aug '62 and transferred to Company C, of the 81st IL on 25 Jan '63. He was soon promoted to 2nd Lieutenant for 3 years but was wounded by gunshot on 22 May '63 at Vicksburg, Mississippi during an assault upon the enemy's works. He returned home to recuperate but the wound in his right thigh had done its' cruel work. The Lt. died of his wound on 3 Nov '63 near Du Quion, Illinois.
An application was made to the pension office concerning Abraham's service and death. His widow and child received a Pension until Penepole married the widower Daniel B. Van Winkle, also a Union veteran and a Methodist minister, in Perry county, Illinois. Daniel's first wife had died in 1863 while Daniel was in the Stones River campaign. Lilly received a pension of $15 a month until 4 Nov '76, (her 16th birthday).
