MARY E. DAWSON
DIES, AGED 82;
Mrs. Mary Eva Dawson, 82, Gold Star Mother and widow of James Dawson, for 16 years a resident of Oregon City, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Oliver Clark, at Grants Pass Friday morning following a paralytic stroke. Three and one-half years ago Mrs. Dawson suffered a hip fracture and since this time had been in ill health.
Mrs. Dawson, who was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal church while making her home in this city, and also active member of St. Paul's guild, was the daughter of Michael and Mary Taylor, and was born in New York. She married Mr. Dawson at Sheboygan, Mich., and came West to 1907, settling at LaGrande, Ore., coming to Oregon City in 1909. In 1925 she moved to Portland.
Mrs. Dawson, a flower lover, was responsible for the organization of the Wayside Garden club, Portland, and on the Feb. 15, birthday anniversary of Mrs. Dawson, a social gathering was held each year by that organization. She served as the first president of the club and continued active until her accident. After moving to Portland she was active in the St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal church.
Mrs. Dawson was one of the first Gold Star Mothers to make the trip overseas following World War I, her son, Howard, having died in France in 1918 from pneumonia. Another son, Thomas, was accidentally killed near Lyle, Wash., in 1910 while employed in a logging camp.
Mrs. Dawson is survived by the following children, Mrs. G. Fletcher Mighells, Rt. 3, Oregon City; Mrs. Oliver Clark, Grants Pass; Mrs. George Holzman, Hubbard; Mrs. Cecil J. Kerr, Amboy, Wash.; Mrs. John Eggink, Portland; Arthur, Washougal, Wash.; Kenneth, Bremerton, Wash.; John, Seal Rock, Ore. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11 a. m. at Holman, Hankins and Rilance chapel, with Rev. Hal R. Gross , rector of St. Paul's Episcopal church, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Mountain View cemetery and the body laid to rest beside that of her husband.
