James Bennett was the son of Dan Bennett and Viola Oldham.

He married Oma Gant on September 22, 1950, Luling, Caldwell Co., TX. She is the daughter of John Thomas Gant born 1868 MS and Ida I. Moore born 1885 TX.

OBITUARY:
James E. Bennett passed away on July 1, 2009, in Huntsville. He was born in Crockett on March 12, 1922, to Robert Daniel Bennett "Dan" and Jenny Viola Bennett (Oldham).

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John D. Bennett, J.B. Bennett and Efton Bennett; and sister, Loretta Bennett Henry.

Survivors include his wife, Oma Gant Bennett; brothers, Quincy Bennett and wife Barbara of Dodge Center, Minn., Donald Bennett and wife Billie of Latexo, Texas, and A.D. "Bill" Bennett of Crockett; and sister, Annie Bell Bennett Watson of Latexo, Texas.He is also survived by nieces and husbands, Denise and Terry Vogler of Huntsville, and Gayann and Bill Herring, and niece, Elaine Heathcock and brother-in-law, Y.B. Heathcock, all of Devine, Texas. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bennett served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and then was a civil service worker for the U.S. Air Force Base in Phoenix, Ariz. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 23 in Glendale, Ariz., for 50 years and in 2009 became a member of Masonic Lodge No. 21 in Crockett.The Bennetts lived in Salmon, Idaho, for several years where they enjoyed camping and fishing in the Salmon River. They also enjoyed traveling extensively in North America in their earlier years. He was a wood carver and spent many hours on gifts for all of his friends and family. Services will be July 3, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville with the Rev. Gary Garrison, pastor of the Second Baptist Church in Huntsville, officiating. Interment will be on July 3, 2009, at 3 p.m. at McNeil Cemetery near Luling with the Rev. Charles Lee Woodward, pastor of McNeil Baptist Church officiating.Those wishing to leave memorial condolences for the family may do so at www.shmfh.com.Sam Houston
