Jessie Pelton — known during her youth by her birth name, Bessie — spent the early years of her childhood in Portland, Oregon. As a teenager she lived at Oregon State Industrial School for Girls in Salem. In 1918 she married Vernon Avery, a brakeman for Northern Pacific Railroad. The couple resided in several locations, including Tacoma, Washington, and Reno, Nevada. They had no children, and were later divorced. Afterward, Jessie lived at Truckee, California, where she worked as a waitress in a restaurant. She died at 30 from injuries she sustained in an automobile collision on the Reno-Carson City Highway, about ten miles south of Reno, Nevada.
