HITCHCOCK Louis Speaker, 82. a retired master carpenter and Construction Contractor, died at his residence on Aug. 7,1993, after a lengthy illness from a stroke he suffered eight years ago. Veterans of Foreign Wars graveside funeral services will be held Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Aug. 10, and a vigil by Sister Mary Ann will be held Aug. 10 at Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque. Mr. Speaker was born on Nov. 20,1910 in Galveston, to Fred and Alice Speaker, who were German immigrants. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William, Theodore, Fredrick and Herman Speaker, and one sister, Mildred.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Agnes Mayeaux Speaker of Alta Loma, one son, Davis Louis Speaker of Hitchcock; one brother, George Speaker of Hitchcock.

Mr. Speaker was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and was shipped to the European Theatre during World War II. Three days after the invasion of Normandy, Speaker and his Co. A., 33rd Armored Engineer Battalion landed at Omaha Beach. He was wounded by German SS troopers in Holland and later fought at the Battle of the Bulge. His Army decorations include the Purple Heart, European Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, good conduct medal and World War II Victory Medal.

After the war Speaker went to work for the old Tin Smelter in Texas City and then started building houses for Gordon Latimer and other local contractors all over
