Samuel Peters born 1816 in Blue Hill, Maine to parents Samuel and Ruth (Horton) Brown. In 1841 he married Charlotte Metcalf Mason of Orland, Maine, daughter of Horatio and Nancy (Prescott) Mason.
Together Samuel and Charlotte had 11 children with only 7 living, one being my great-grandfather Frank Mason Brown.
Charlotte died June 22 1858 at the age of 37 in Maine. In 1859 Samuel then married Harriet Eliza Grendle of Maine.
Together Samuel and Harriet had 7 children.

Samuel was one of the leading men in the town of Orland, Maine. He was a ship- builder, banker and surveyor. As a well educated man he also taught the village school. He was a member of the Maine House of Representatives in 1845-1846 and again in 1858-1859. He owned many different business some of them were lumber, ice and the fur business.

In 1861 President Lincoln appointed him Navy Agent at Washington. And through him many millions of dollars worth of ships, guns and naval war materials were purchased during the Civil War.

With his family now living in Washington DC he became interested in the reform of the city. Through his efforts a number of civic and municipal improvements were made, including a new school system and a board of health.
He also founded the Village of Mount Pleasant.

Samuel was appointed a member of the city's public works and with all the improvements that were made,"It may be said to be the beginning of the work that has made the Capital City of the United States so beautiful"
