Anson Lorenzo Brewer, the youngest child of Charles and Anna Chatterton Brewer, was born on 22 February 1800, in Wilbraham, Massachusetts.

Anson eventually moved from Wilbraham and started a new life in New Lisbon, Ohio when started practicing law in 1826 and became the Village Recorder/Clerk in 1829.

On 31 December 1834, he married the former Harriett C. Dunbar from Woodville, Mississippi. He later married the former Sarah Ann Endley on 25 July 1837 in New Lisbon. From this marriage they had five sons; Charles, George E., Robert F., Edwin P., and William Foster Brewer.

Anson served as President of the The Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company of New Lisbon from 1852-64. Also during this time period, he was elected to the Ohio State Senate where he served from 1860-61.

It is unknown when Anson received his commission or when he was appointed Paymaster in the Army. According to the 15 February 1866 edition of The Wellsville Union, Anson and his son Robert (also in the service to his country), were on the steamboat W.R. Carter on [3] February 1866, when it exploded about 35 miles north of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Both were killed during the explosion. Anson was on his way to New Orleans, Louisiana to report for duty.

In addition to his wife Sarah; he was survived by three of his sons, George, Edwin, and William. He was preceded in death by two of his sons, Charles (who died during the Civil War) and Robert; and his parents.
