Alexander B. "A.B." Agee was born in Nelson County on 27 October 1850 the first of ten children of Lyon E. Agee, a twenty-two-year-old overseer, and Amanda J. Dowdy, his seventeen-year-old bride. Sometime before 1880 he married Josephine Brightwell, the youngest daughter of Josiah and Henrietta Brigtwell. A.B. Agee was a Cumberland County deputy Sheriff.
On 24 April 1890 A.B. Agee died at the age of thirty-nine and was the first individual interred in the Brightwells' family cemetery. One can imagine the scene at graveside, Josiah and Henrietta Brightwell comforting their widowed daughter while family, friends and county residents lay to rest one of their deputy sheriffs, a young man struck down in the prime of life. He and Josie (Brightwell) Agee had no children. She later married Richard T. Robertson.
