|Death: ||Feb. 8, 1883|
Carl emigrated as a young boy with his family from Mecklenberg, Germany, to the states in 1854, along with his paternal grandmother, aunt Sophia and uncle Henry. Sadly, Carl's twin Heinz, 6 yrs., died on the trip.
Carl's mother died in 1863 and in 1865 he is living in Bristol, Fillmore County, Minnesota with his father, grandmother and siblings. He is not on the 1870 federal census as living with his family.
In the 1875 territorial census, listed as Charles Bastian, he is living in Lake Marshall, Lyon County, Minnesota, and is single. On December 5, 1875, in Marshall, Lyon County, Charles marries Alabama "Allie" M. Clark; and, by 1880, listed as Charles M. Bastian, he is living in Lake Marshall with his wife and young sons Frank A., 3, and Ernest, 2, and cousin Louis (Ludwig), 21, his uncle Henry's son. He is working as a carpenter. His sister Adeline is also in Lake Marshall at this time working as a servant.
By 1883, Carl and his family are in New Ulm, Brown County, Minnesota, where he dies. His wife and sons, as evinced by the 1885 territorial census, have moved in with her parents and siblings in Sodue, Lyon County, Minnesota
